A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. One day the mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule calling for help. After carefully looking over the mule’s problem, the farmer felt sorry for him but decided that it wasn’t worth the trouble of trying to pull the mule out. He called his neighbors together and told them what had happened then asked them to help him haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.
At first, the old mule was terrified! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling dirt onto his back…he suddenly had a bright idea. Every time a shovel load of dirt hit his back…HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! This he did, time after time.
“Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up,” he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the dirt came at him, the old mule fought “panic” and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP! Therefore, it wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him, actually blessed him. Shake it off and step up.
