Terri: Hey, Sonya, how’d you do on the test?
Sonya: I don’t know. I think I did okay but I’m afraid to look.
Terri: Well?
Sonya: I don’t believe it. I FAILED!
Woodrow Kroll: Do you remember experiencing anything like that when you were in school? Thinking you had done well, only to find out that you didn’t make the grade. What a disappointment. A similar thing happened to a rich young ruler in the Bible. He came to Jesus and wanted eternal life but only if he could somehow earn it, you know, make the grade.
When the Savior informed him that he needed to give up all that he had and trust in Jesus alone, he…well, Matthew 19:22 records it this way: "He went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions." He’s the only man in Scripture who meaningfully interacted with Jesus and went away unhappy.
Those who think they can make it to God on their own merit will experience life’s greatest disappointment. They’ll realize that apart from Christ, there is no hope.
God’s Word is filled with truth that will help us to make wise choices and avoid unnecessary disappointments. Don’t wait until it’s too late to learn the truth. It’s only through Jesus that we can experience a relationship with God.
This Bible Minute with Woodrow Kroll is a ministry of Back to the Bible, encouraging you to seek spiritual wisdom from the Book of Life.
