Woodrow Kroll: I'm Woodrow Kroll and this is the Bible Minute. In 1812, Napoleon considered invading Russia. Upon hearing the plans, the commanding officer shrewdly remarked, "Man proposes, but God disposes."
Napoleon shot back, "I propose, and I dispose."
Well, such pride proved fatal. Using one of His most fragile creations, the snowflake, God brought the proud general to his knees. Bogged down in heavy snow, Napoleon ordered a retreat. His army of 600,000 men was decimated with fewer than a 100,000 making it home. The disaster ultimately weakened his armies and brought about his final defeat.
Have you thought much about God's sovereignty? In the Old Testament, Exodus 18:11, when Moses' father-in-law heard how God defeated the mighty Egyptians, he exclaimed, "Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them."
So often we look at the size of a nation's army or how many warships they own and forget that God is Sovereign and He can turn any battle as He chooses.
Maybe you're facing what seem to be insurmountable problems in your life today. Cheer up. God is greater than any of your problems. He is a Sovereign God. He rules over all, even the events of your life.
You can get to know Him by reading your Bible. So don't let the only Book God ever wrote just lie there gathering dust. Pick up your Bible and read it today. Meet the God who is Sovereign and can overcome any problem in your life.
