Woodrow Kroll: I'm Woodrow Kroll and this is the Bible Minute. Calvin Coolidge knew what it meant to be merciful. Early in his presidency, Coolidge awoke one night to a young man stealing from his hotel room. Instead of crying out to his Secret Service agents, Coolidge asked the man what he needed. Stunned, the thief told his story. He was a poor college student needing $32 dollars to get back to school. Coolidge listened quietly; then opened his wallet and loaned the money! To top it off, he then showed the young man how to slip out of the hotel room without being caught by the Secret Service! Talk about mercy, I doubt any of us would do the same. But Luke chapter 6:36 challenges us, "Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful." Because of our sin, we owe God a far greater debt than we could ever hope to repay. Yet in His mercy, God not only forgave us—but paid that debt for us. That's why His Son died at Calvary's cross. Jesus died for us, showing mercy to us when we could give nothing in return. I'm glad for God's mercy. It lifted me from the penalty of my sin and has given me a hope for eternity. What a great God He is! Do you know Him? Have you experienced His mercy personally? You can learn more about His mercy as you read your Bible. Check out Luke 6:36. Discover what God has done for you.
