Man 1: Hey, how's it goin'?
SFX: Someone rambling in an indiscernible language
Man 1: Uhhh! You're not from this neighborhood are you?
Man 2: Ba-ga baga, baga, baga!
Woodrow Kroll: Don't ask me what's he's saying. Language is a distinctive that sets us apart. Even simple accents allow people to identify what part of the country they're from. Such was the case in today's Bible Minute. Hi, I'm Woodrow Kroll.
The Gileadites were at war with the Ephraimites. They both spoke the same language, which made it hard to identify the enemy. But Jephthah knew the Ephraimites had difficulty saying the word "Shibboleth." So each time a Gileadite met the enemy, they asked him to, "'say, "Shibboleth"!' And he would say "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it right. Then they would take him and kill him." Jephthah knew the enemy by his speech.
Do you know your enemy by his speech? Every day the devil tries to fool us through carefully chosen lies and deception. He's often far more successful than he should be because we can know the truth by reading God's Word. We can detect his lies when we compare them to the truth of the Bible. Open your Bible today. Identify the enemy and find victory through God. You won't be sorry you did.
