"Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." ---James 4:17 We usually think that sin is wrong action, and it is. However, not all sin is wrong action. Here James explains to us that sin can be inaction. That is, we can sin by not doing something. There are things we all know we should do. Sometimes it seems to be easier not to do them, that is, to just do nothing. However, by doing nothing when we should do something we actually sin. So, what's so serious about that? Simply this: sin does not please God. It doesn't matter if it is sin we do or sin we don't do; any kind of sin displeases God. Furthermore, God will hold us accountable for all types of sin. Therefore, when we know we should do a thing, it is best for us to get at it and get it done. If we fail to do so we displease God and possibly make others unhappy, or even suffer, as well.
