Woodrow Kroll: They are the subject of books, magazine articles and talk shows across the country: Generation X. If you've followed the Generation X talk, most of it isn't very flattering or encouraging.
So how should a Christian relate to this controversial generation? In a word, the answer is love. First Timothy 4:12 tells young people, "Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity."
Sometimes adults see Generation Xers as less motivated, less dedicated—even less spiritual than our generation. But the Bible says in Philippians 2:3, "In lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself."
Now esteeming others as better isn't natural for any of us. But for those who claim the name of Christ, it's the only way to go. So the next time you're tempted to cast someone off with a negative stereotype, whether an Xer or not, check out your Bible. The Book of Philippians has great advice for everyday challenges. |
