SAFETY MARGINS

Everything built nowadays is engineered with safety margins. For instance, architects, when building large public stadiums, always include in their calculations materials strong enough to stand what they call “the weight of enthusiasm.” This means that when crowds are attending some popular event at the stadium and suddenly everyone excitedly stands up at the same time, that there will be strength enough to cope with the extra strain upon the undergirding of the structure. This extra margin of strength is put into every material utility on which human life depends. From ancient history, Moses, the great lawgiver, delivered to mankind God’s ten rules or laws. We call these the Ten Commandments. These ten laws are well-engineered safety margins. If we obey them, they actually protect us from hurting ourselves.
