The Syntactic Causative Approach to the English Middle construction
Abstract:
Middle construction has been researched a lot for its particular syntactic and semantics properties. Many schools study it from different views. The derivation of middle construction is the focus of those studies . At present there are two major schools on the derivation process, one is called lexical approach and the other NP movement approach. The former school holds that the derivation of the middle construction is a pre-syntax process, which happens in the lexicon. While the later argues that this process is dealt with in the syntax, because the NP behind the verb can not get its case and have to move to the subject position for the case. Great achievements having been made by the two schools, there still exist, to different degree, some defects on these researches .The most obvious one is that the above approaches have not mentioned the middle construction whose subject is not patient but rather the instrument or location.
Based on a thorough investigation of the former researches on this subject, this study aims to make a unified account for the derivation of this particular structure. The writer classifies middle constructions to two classes. The middle constructions in which instrument or location as subjects(eg. The knife cuts well. &The truck loads easily.),which are not formerly studied deliberately or unintentionally, are classified here as the subcategories of the standard middle constructions. The derivation of such middle construction is explored here.
With VP-shell and other theories as the theoretical background, the writer provides a causative approach to unify the above three kinds of standard middle constructions. The writer thinks that it is the intrinsic property of the subject that causes the event described by the predicate. This is realized by the causative light verb v. This approach thus provides some answers to the problems unsolved by the Lexical approach and the NP movement approach and provides an unified account for the derivation of different kinds of middle construction .
