She: It says here (reading), "Do not add water until..."
SFX: Sound of water being poured from pitcher.
She: Oh no, it's ruined! I wasn't s'posed to add water yet...
Woodrow Kroll: That's the way it goes sometimes, isn't it? Once you let something out, you can't take it back. That's the way it is with our speech, too. Once the words have left our mouths, there's no taking them back.
I'm Woodrow Kroll and we've all had an encounter with an angry person—maybe even a close friend. You know how it goes: they say something mean and you try to hold back. Your friend says something even meaner and this time you don't hold back. You let him have it with a verbal barrage. But even as the words escape your mouth, you wish you hadn't said them. And like spilled water, you can never take it all back.
So how should you handle the next angry person you meet? The Bible tells us in Proverbs 17:14, "The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts."
The Book of Proverbs is full of practical advice. Proverbs 17:14 is a great verse that, someday, might keep you from blowing your stack when someone else has already blown their's. |
