Woodrow Kroll: It happened to a friend of mine. He and his wife were called to a farmhouse where the grandfather had just died. The grandma met the two of them as they stepped into the large kitchen.
Together the three of them stood there, arms around each other, tears silently falling, for—oh it must have been 20 seconds. Then grandma wiped the tears from her eyes and said, "Oh, he always knows just what to say."
Knows what to say? My friend didn't say a word, not one syllable. Sometimes it's not what we say with our lips that's important, it's what we say with our hearts.
The Bible instructs us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to "comfort each other and edify one another." Like my friend, we need to "speak" that word of encouragement in every situation, even if that word has to be spoken in silence.
You'll find lots of good advice on how to comfort one another in the pages of God's Word. And while you're looking for comfort for your friends, don't be surprised if you discover some for yourself. The Bible, it's a remarkable book. |
