Scoffer: Okay, you say you hate the sin but the love the sinner.
Christian: Well, yeah.
Scoffer: So, you say you hate homosexuality but love homosexuals?
Christian: I try to.
Scoffer: And you say you think it's wrong to live together even if the couple loves each other?
Christian: Well, love doesn't have anything to do with it. It's just wrong to…
Scoffer: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've heard it all before. You Christians hate everything. You're all alike.
Woodrow Kroll: That's quite an accusation. Is there ever a time when it's okay to hate? Amos 5:15 gives an interesting perspective. It says, "Hate evil, love good."
Sometimes in the Bible, hate just means to love one thing less than another. But here in the Book of Amos, it means to feel a hostility toward that which is wrong.
We're to love the sinner. But we can't put our stamp of approval on lifestyles or activities that directly oppose God's standard of righteousness. God says that we're to hate evil. In this day and age, it's difficult to stand up for what's right. It's even more difficult to stand against what's wrong.
Need some help? Read God's Word. It's the only resource you have to discern God's standards for right and wrong. |
