SFX: Trumpet fanfare, crowds cheer.
Woodrow Kroll: He spent his time as most kings do: inspecting his lands, speaking with his subjects and greeting foreign dignitaries. But Joshua Abraham Norton wasn't your usual king. When he arrived in San Francisco during the height of America's Gold Rush, Norton claimed to be "The Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico." No one took him seriously...but everyone liked him just the same.
Well, claiming to be a king and actually being one are two different things. To be a king you must have authority—something Joshua Abraham Norton lacked. But there is one King who has all authority, ultimate authority. That's Jehovah God.
His Kingship is mentioned often throughout the Scripture. But Psalm 97 states it in just three words, "The LORD reigns." You see there is no one else beside Him. God doesn't share His throne with others. He alone is King and thereby is worthy of our worship.
I know in the twenty-first century it's hard to understand the concept of kingship. All you really need to know is that you have a King you can trust. He is benevolent. He cares. And the best news is that you can know Him personally. The Bible tells you how. Open your Bible today and read about the King of kings and His glorious kingdom. Then rejoice because "The LORD reigns!"
