ECCLESIASTES 1:8 The eye is not satisfied with seeing or the ear filled with hearing.
the sentence is quoted from NRSV bible.
why not used "of" instead of using "or" in this sentence? why not use "is filled" instead of "fiilled" like the "is satisfied" in the foreside of the sentence?
You can understand the sentence in this way: The eye is not satisfied with seeing or the ear (is not satisfied to be) filled with hearing.“眼看,看不饱;耳听,听不足。(启导本)” You cannot say "...seeing of..."; besides, "of "as a proposition normally is followed by "verb+ing" or pronoun, noun or noun phrase. Grammatically and intuitively considered, "of" cannot be used here.
