Mothers teach us all kinds of useful tidbits, such as—the things that my own mother taught me: When angry, sing. Do your toughest job first. Don’t carry a chip on your shoulder. When everything looks like it is falling apart, never give up. Be willing to let your hair down. Don’t be so proud. There are other fish in the sea. Keep a pack of gum in your purse… Write or call home once a week. Pulling or hoeing weeds is the greatest therapy you can find. You’re (almost) never too old to learn to swim or do something new. Most of our mothers were or are average, practical women. Take a few minutes and think of all the thankless, even disgusting tasks your mother has performed for you. No mother is perfect and each has plenty of flaws. But on Mother’s Day—or any other day, think of the things you can appreciate about your mother and don’t forget to say thanks.
