Termination
============
Several years ago, I worked in the C-band industry in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. C-band is big dish satellite television.
I was a customer service rep, when one night rather late,
I got a phone call from a customer wanting to cancel service.
Upon looking at the account, I noticed the customer had always
paid on time and had expressed great joy with our service.
Normally I would have just terminated the service and gone on to
another call, but something in the caller's voice did not sound
right.
I asked him if there was something wrong with our service, had
we made him angry or done something out of the ordinary to make
him cancel service.
He paused for a minute and then expressed that he had no idea
why he was about to tell me what he was up to.
His wife had run off with a younger man, leaving behind a
husband and two children, two little girls, 6 and 9.
He said he was canceling not just his TV service but all his
services and utilities.
He was planning to commit suicide.
I often wondered why I was in that job, there really wasn't a
challenge and the hours were terrible. But I took the time to
hear the desperation in this man's voice, his reaching out when
it seemed no one was listening.
I spent about an hour on the phone with this man, I shared the
love of our Lord and Savior with him. I reminded him of his two
daughters, they were gifts from God and he was only feeling
sorry for himself.
I shared my story of how I had lost my first wife in an auto
accident, leaving me with two babies, 3 and 5 years old. Sure
it was hard, but the Lord met my needs and was there every step
of the way.
I placed a call to the minister of this young man and expressed
my concerns and asked if the pastor would call him that night.
He said he would, and he was glad I had called since he knew
nothing of the problem.
I thank God that I was in the right place at the right time.
I no longer ask why am I here. God knows where that next phone
call will come from.
This young man called me back about a month later and thanked me
for taking a little time. He promised me he and the girls were
fine, going to church, and putting their lives back together,
with God at the controls.
