Patient: Can you help me doctor? What is my problem?
Psychologist: The problem is clear. You simply don't love yourself enough. This is a common problem today. Selfishness simply doesn't come easy for us...we must learn to love and cherish ourselves.
Woodrow Kroll: There are those today who think we need to spend time learning to love ourselves. Ephesians 5:29 states, "no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it." Selfishness doesn't have to be taught, we are selfish by nature.
The key for the Christian is not to think too highly or too lowly of ourselves but to see ourselves as God sees us. Whether we struggle from pride or poor self-esteem, the problem isn't that we don't love ourselves enough; the problem is we aren't seeing ourselves as God sees us.
God sees us through His grace and Jesus' sacrifice for our sins. We are seated with Christ in the heavenlies but only through His work on our behalf. To have a correct view of self we don't need more psychology, we need more theology. The first step toward a proper view of self is to pick up a Bible and read it today. |
