Mother: (Reading from book) "And the wicked stepmother was forced to wear red shoes and danced and danced until she fell down dead."*
Woodrow Kroll: Whether we're talking about Snow White, Cinderella or Hansel and Gretel, the role of stepparent has received a lot of bad press. Stories seemingly always portray them as wicked and cruel. Aren't you glad that's not what the Bible says?
In the Old Testament a woman named Hannah prayed for a son. She promised to give him in service to God if her request was answered. She kept her promise and when Samuel was born, she brought him to live with Eli, the priest. Eli became Samuel's stepparent and taught him about God. 1 Samuel 2:18says, "Samuel ministered before the LORD."
Life is not perfect and sometimes becoming a stepparent is the consequence. It can give you, however, a tremendous opportunity to make a spiritual impact on a child. The Bible tells you how.
It's the greatest sourcebook you'll ever have. If you want to find out how you can spiritually encourage your stepchildren, read the story of Samuel in 1 Samuel, chapters 2 and 3.
