Woodrow Kroll: You've seen them, walking hand in hand at the mall. They're not young anymore. You're tempted to believe they're walking hand in hand just to hold each other up. They turn around and you know their faces. They are your mom and dad. No longer young. Leaning on each other for support.
Funny how things change. People change. Responsibilities change. What is our responsibility to an elderly parent? The Bible talks about it in 1 Timothy 5:8 with this warning, "If any one does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith."
Strong words, aren't they? Evidently providing for the needs of those in our own house—our elderly parents—is extremely important in God's eyes. God wants us to care for and nurture them in their old age, just like they cared for us when we were young. To do anything less is to deny our faith.
God gave us these parents. We must help them in their hour of need. If you want to learn more about your responsibility to elderly parents, you'll find it clearly outlined in God's Word. |
