Woodrow Kroll: A while back, a pro bowl receiver for the Dallas Cowboys missed several games because of drug problems. A quarterback for Green Bay had to break free from the clutches of prescription drugs. One of the best college linebackers in the country was dismissed from his team because of alcohol related problems. Athletes risk losing millions of dollars and public shame but still cannot control their abuse of drugs and alcohol.
The power of these drugs is frightening. How can we help those who struggle with such abuses? The key is for people to find something positive to replace the substance. Paul states in Ephesians 5:18, "And do not be drunk with wine...but be filled with the Spirit." People need to let God control their lives instead of alcohol or drugs.
If you know someone with these problems, your goal needs to be to introduce them to the God who loves them. It's not enough to take away the drug, they need to replace it with the Spirit of God. Whatever problems people face, the Bible offers real answers. Remember, there is an alternative to getting drunk or high on drugs. The Bible offers that alternative. Read it for yourself. |
