Professor: The origin of the universe goes back to the big bang.
Student: Excuse me, Professor, but are you saying the universe created itself?
Professor: Yes, you could say that.
Student: How could the universe create itself if it didn't yet exist?
Professor: Well it, uhh, then uhhh, billions of years ago it, hmmm...
Woodrow Kroll: I think the professor is stumped. The idea that anything could be self-creating is illogical. If something doesn't exist, it can't cause anything else to happen. I'm Woodrow Kroll and this is the Bible Minute.
God is self-existent. He has always been. God doesn't need anyone else or anything else to exist. He is. In John 8:58 Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." Not just I was, but I AM.
Jesus was saying more than that He predated Abraham. He was saying that He has always been. He is self-existent. As a result, He has no needs. He depends on no one. He doesn't even have the potential to lack anything because He is the only one in the universe who is totally free.
That's why it's important for you get to know this God! And how are you going to do that? Only one way—by reading His Word. You'll see how God is self-existent and how He can make a difference in your life. All of that can be found in the pages of your Bible.
