Woodrow Kroll: Have you ever noticed that there are some words that are overused today? How about the word "awesome"?
SFX: Car zooming past.
Voice 1: Man, that car is awesome!
SFX: Crowd.
Voice 2: How was the concert, awesome?
SFX: B-ball practice.
Voice 3: Did you see that game last night? That guy is awesome!
Woodrow Kroll: There's one thing that isn't awesome any more. That's the word awesome. It's been reduced to a meaningless cliché. So is there anything that's truly awesome? I'm Woodrow Kroll and this is the Bible Minute.
Listen to the words of Nehemiah 1:5, "And I said: 'I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God." Was Nehemiah just using a trite cliché or does the word awesome have a greater meaning?
Think about this. Awesome literally means to be awe-inspiring. When something or someone is so great that we gasp and our mouths hang open in wonder, that person is awesome. A car is not awesome. An athlete is not awesome. God is awesome.
Nehemiah acknowledged that God is so great, he gasps in wonder. When was the last time you gasped at the greatness of God? Has God become so familiar that you've lost your sense of excitement?
Perhaps you need to spend some time recapturing the wonder of God. The best way to do that is to read and meditate on His Word. Look specifically for what makes God such an awesome God. You'll be amazed at what you see every time you read your Bible. The Bible. Read it for answers. Read it for life.
